In the universe tamas is a quality that destroys the old so that sattva can create the new. In the body and in the mind tamas is helpful in completing the actions that were started by sattva or rajas. Some tamas is necessary for everyone because it influences relaxation and sleep. Too much tamas can make the mind dull and lead to depression. It can also make the body lazy and lethargic.
Those who are dominated by tamas often end up living in self-indulgence. Their lives can be self-destructive. Drug addictions and excessive alcohol consumption can be signs of too much tamas.
When the mind that is influenced by tamas becomes increasingly dull and depressed, the person ends up caring even less about their self-destructive habits and their own health. A tamasic person is not able to tell what is good for him and what is bad. This type of a person is also not able to find stress relief or to balance his or her own emotions.
Tamasic food lacks prana (life force). Tamasic foods include leftovers, greasy and deep-fried food and excessive amounts of meat, hard cheese, eggs or seafood. Alcohol and drugs are tamasic in quality but they can influence rajas too. Good ways for a tamasic person to find stress relief, to balance emotions and to get rid of excess tamas include dynamic but gentle exercise, fresh air, eating more foods that have sattvic qualities and making sattvic choices.
Sattva has the qualities of clarity, energy, life and creativity, truth, harmony, peace and love. Sattvic people are usually strong in their spiritual path without turning into fanaticism. Individuals dominated by sattva are happy, humble and content, and they are rarely angry. Their minds are alert and focused. They are usually creative, inspiring, curious and corteous. Sattvic people intuitively know what is good for them.
Sattva is the most desirable of all the three gunas. Sattva helps a person to develop a skill for good actions, to think clearly and to abide by natural laws. The mind that is dominated by sattva is strong, intelligent and gentle.
Sattvic foods are easy for the digestion. They are light and full of life energy (prana). Foods that are predominantly sattvic include organic and lightly cooked vegetables, ripe fruit, clarified butter (ghee) in small amounts, raw honey, ginger, fennel, cardamom, seeds and nuts. Milk is sattvic if it comes from a cow that lives in a natural and peaceful environment.
Choosing sattvic foods and sattvic activities help to increase sattva. Yoga, tai chi, chi gung, pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation are all sattvic. Avoiding stressed-out people or situations that cause stress help to build up sattva.
Rajas is the guna of movement and activity. Rajas is necessary in small amounts because it helps to get things done. When found in excessive amounts this guna leads to restlessness and hyperactivity. A rajasic mind cannot find rest or clarity and too much rajas leads to fear, anxiety and agitation. Stress relief is impossible when there is too much rajas.
Rajas may also create a fiercely competitive spirit, aggression, jealousy and unnecessary pride. Those who have an excessive amount of rajas in their body and mind are people who put a high value on material wealth, power, success and business. They may be fanatical and they may try to push their beliefs on others.
Foods with rajasic qualities include junk food, processed food and foods that are excessively sour, spicy, sweet or pungent. These foods can upset and irritate the digestion, create disturbance in the mind and make the body agitated.
Avoiding too many rajasic foods is one way to balance the amount of rajas in the body. Disturbing situations and people can also increase rajas.
